Portsmouth’s $4 Million Open Space and Recreational Development Bond Passes

This morning, Aquidneck Islanders woke up to the good news that the Town of Portsmouth passed its $4 million Open Space and Recreational Development Bond yesterday.  Long-term vision won the day.  In 2005 and 2006, Aquidneck Island lost around 360 acres to development with about 300 of those acres being in Portsmouth alone.  Now is the time to act for land conservation and the environment in Portsmouth, and that is exactly what the majority of people did at the voting stations yesterday.  Their actions at the polls will benefit all who love Aquidneck Island for generations to come.

The Aquidneck Land Trust would like to thank everyone who joined us in helping to pass the Open Space and Recreational Development Bond, especially the following: the Portsmouth Town Council and staff; the Portsmouth Open Space Committee; the Portsmouth Economic Development Committee; Portsmouth youth sports leagues; the Portsmouth equestrian community; numerous committed volunteers; and of course the voters of Portsmouth.

The Aquidneck Land Trust’s mission is to preserve Aquidneck Island’s open spaces and natural character for the lasting benefit of our community. The Land Trust has conserved over 1,886 acres on Aquidneck Island. The Land Trust is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. For more information about the Land Trust, visit www.AquidneckLandTrust.org.

As always, thank you for your continued support
for conservation on our Island.
