KEEPING GREEN END AVENUE GREEN

Yesterday, May 12, 2005, the Aquidneck Land Trust and the Silvia family permanently conserved 15.30 +/- acres with frontage on Green End Avenue in Middletown.

The subject land is valuable from a conservation perspective for various reasons.  The land contains Prime Agricultural Soils (Newport silt loam and Pittstown silt loam), the United States Department of Agriculture,s highest ranking for agricultural soils.  The property also affords scenic vistas to passersby on Green End Avenue and Howland Avenue.  The Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus), listed as a Species of Conservation Concern in the State of Rhode Island, has also been observed feeding on the site.  Glossy Ibis use agricultural lands for foraging and may be limited by foraging habitat availability.  Green End Avenue is now a little bit greener!

This year alone, the Aquidneck Land Trust has permanently conserved 79.55 +/- acres.  The Aquidneck Land Trust,s total conserved acreage now stands at 1,183.34 +/- acres.

The Aquidneck Land Trust is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  Its mission is to preserve Aquidneck Island,s open spaces and natural character for the lasting benefit of our community.  For more information, please visit www.AquidneckLandTrust.org or call 401-849-2799.
