On
Saturday, July 28, the Aquidneck Land Trust (ALT) is holding a free
“Land Matters Walk & Talk” tour of Miantonomi Memorial Park and the
abutting Sunset Hill. Together, these two properties cover about 36
acres and form the ‘green heart” of the densely populated North End
of Newport. In October 2006, the Aquidneck Land Trust and the City
of Newport worked together to complete ongoing efforts to conserve
these parcels with conservation easements. Miantonomi Tower, which
sits atop one of the highest points on the Island will be open to
the public beginning at 9 a.m.. The formal portion of the tour will
begin at 10 a.m. with conservation biologist Carol Trocki who will
discuss the diverse variety of wildlife that call this park home and
possibly historian Kathy Abbass for a tour of the Revolutionary War
earthworks that grace the site. Space is limited and can be reserved
by contacting the Aquidneck Land Trust at 401-849-2799, ext. 19, or
csabato@ailt.org.
The ALT’s mission is to preserve Aquidneck Island's open spaces and
natural character for the lasting benefit of our community. ALT has
conserved more than 1,886 acres on Aquidneck Island since its
inception about 16 years ago. The Land Trust is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization. For more information, visit
