2005-06 Annual Appeal

UPDATE

Thank you Michele Foster and George and Nanette Herrick for co-chairing our Annual Appeal!

And thank you, our friends and members, for supporting the Aquidneck Land Trust's Annual Appeal. To date, $88,000 in donations and pledges have been made toward our $125,000 goal. The remaining $37,000 of our goal must be raised by March 31st because we have a tremendous amount of conservation work to do in the first quarter of 2006.

While we conserved over 184 acres in 2005 - a banner year for the Aquidneck Land Trust- over 230 acres were lost to development. Please help us win the race to save our Island's last remaining unspoiled places. Your support of our Annual Appeal will go far to help us save land for people in 2006 and beyond.

If you've already responded - thank you for your ongoing commitment. Help us even more by passing this along to your friends and family.

Many Thanks,

Edward S. Clement, Jr.

Executive Director

Aquidneck Land Trust receives

$100,000 grant from

for the Sakonnet Greenway Trail

Middletown, RI - On Wednesday, January 4th, at The Glen in Portsmouth, Thomas W. Kelly, President & CEO of BankNewport, publicly awarded a $100,000 check from BankNewport to the Aquidneck Land Trust for its Sakonnet Greenway Trail project.

Ted Clement, Executive Director for the Land Trust, stated, “On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Land Trust, I want to express the organization’s excitement and heart-felt appreciation for the vision, generosity, and concern for the long-term well-being of the Aquidneck Island community demonstrated by BankNewport’s $100,000 gift.  The Sakonnet Greenway Trail will enable the public to directly benefit from the years of committed conservation work by the Land Trust, as the trail will run through the Land Trust’s Sakonnet Greenway which contains hundreds and hundreds of acres permanently conserved by the Land Trust.”

“BankNewport is extremely proud to extend a leadership gift in the amount of $100,000 to the Aquidneck Land Trust,” stated Thomas W. Kelly, President and CEO of BankNewport.  “The Sakonnet Greenway Trail will ensure Aquidneck Island’s scenic landscape will be preserved and protected for future generations of our families to enjoy. It is our hope that BankNewport’s lead role in the project will inspire additional support from other area organizations.”

Once finished, the Sakonnet Greenway Trail, which will be contained in the Aquidneck Land Trust’s picturesque Sakonnet Greenway on the eastern side of Aquidneck Island, will be the longest single public walking trail on the Island at approximately 7 miles long.  The trail will extend from the Town of Portsmouth’s recreational area known as The Glen, around Newport National Golf Club, and onto the Town of Middletown’s recreational complex on Wyatt Road.  The Land Trust has acquired 6 of the necessary 8 trail easements to make the full trail a reality.  In addition, an approximate 2.2 mile segment of the trail around Newport National Golf Club’s Orchard Course is already built and open to the public.

The Aquidneck Land Trust’s mission is to preserve Aquidneck Island’s open spaces and natural character for the lasting benefit of our community.  With the closing on the conservation restriction for Escobar’s Highland Farm, the Land Trust has conserved over 1,288 acres on Aquidneck Island.  The Land Trust is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  For more information, visit www.AquidneckLandTrust.org or call (401) 849-2799.
